4. Gospel of John
- Francis J. Moloney, The Gospel of John, Sacra Pagina
(Collegeville, MN: Liturgical Press, 1998) hardcover, $35. A good place to
start.
- Raymond E. Brown, The Gospel of John, Anchor Bible
29-29A, 2 vol. (New York: Doubleday, 1966) hardcover . This century has seen
a number of great commentaries on John’s Gospel (Bultmann, Dodd,
Schnackenburg); this is perhaps the most famous. Whereas many scholars
emphasize John’s difference from the Synoptics, Brown emphasizes their
similarities; whereas many scholars deny or downplay its historical value,
Brown emphasizes it. Dated in many respects (e.g., Brown—at that time—accepted
its apostolic authorship, but later changed his view). Still valuable.

commentaries of the century—but controversial and wrong-headed in many of
its interpretations, especially the way he divides things into sources. Use
with great care.

5. Search for the Historical Jesus:
This remains one of the most interesting and creative areas of
New Testament study. In recent years there has been a huge spate of new books on
the historical Jesus. Here are some of the most important—though each have
their biases and agendas and thus need to be assessed carefully.
- John P. Meier, A Marginal Jew: Rethinking the Historical
Jesus (New York: Doubleday, 1991-1994) 2 volumes to date, hardcover,
$35-40 per volume. This is an extraordinary achievement: the most thorough
and well-balanced study of historical Jesus in decades. It is massive
(volume 2 is nearly 1000 pages). But Meier writes with great clarity, and
relegates technical issues to the (very lengthy) endnotes. Basically for
more advanced students. Probably 2 more volumes will be forthcoming.
- Luke Timothy Johnson, The Real Jesus: the Misguided
Quest for the Historical Jesus and the Truth of the Traditional Gospels
(San Francisco: HarperCollins, 1995) paperback, $12. The Jesus Seminar (John
Dominic Crossan, Marcus Borg, & Burton Mack) made headlines last Easter
in Time, Newsweek, and U.S. New & World Report with
their extravagant claims about the historical Jesus. Johnson brilliantly
demolishes their claims, and sets out an excellent mainstream response.
- John Dominic Crossan, The Historical Jesus: the Life of
a Mediterranean Jewish Peasant (San Francisco: HarperCollins, 1992).
Crossan is flamboyant, outspoken, and one of the leaders of the so-called
Jesus Seminar. This is his most thorough and careful study. Crossan thinks
of Jesus as a social revolutionary. He also tends to treat apocryphal
gospels like the Gospel of Thomas or the Gospel of Peter on
par with the 4 canonical gospels. His most radical interpretations come out
most clearly in his more recent books: Jesus: A Radical Biography
(San Francisco: HarperCollins, 1994) and Who Killed Jesus? (San
Francisco: Harper Collins, 1996) in which he argues that Jesus’ body was
never buried, but was eaten by dogs and birds and dumped by the Romans in a
trash heap. Be alert to Crossan’s biases.
- N.T. Wright, Jesus and the Victory of God, Vol. 2 of
Christian Origins and the Question of God (Minneapolis: Fortress
Press, 1997) paperback, $35. A well-argued (and often humorous) challenge to
the Jesus Seminar. At the same time, a fine attempt to reconstruct the
person and message of the historical Jesus.
- Marcus J. Borg, Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time:
the Historical Jesus and the Heart of Contemporary Faith, (San
Francisco: HarperCollins, 1994). One of the leading figures of the Jesus
Seminar.
- Marcus J. Borg, Jesus: a New Vision: Spirit, Culture,
and the Life of Discipleship (San Francisco: Harper San Francisco,
1991).
- Marcus J. Borg & N.T. Wright, The Meaning of Jesus:
Two Visions (San Francisco: Harper San Francisco, 1998) paperback, $24.
Jesus Seminar leader Borg squares off with the more conservative N.T.
Wright, and in alternating chapters present their different visions of the
historical Jesus.
- Gunther Bornkamm, Jesus of Nazareth (reprint of 1960
edition: Minneapolis: Fortress Press, 1994) paperback, $18. Dated, but a
classic.

1991).

from Exciting Archeological Discoveries, Anchor Bible Reference (New
York: Doubleday, 1988).

Religious and Charismatic Experience of Jesus and the First Christians as
Reflected in the New Testament (Grand Rapids: Wm. B. Eerdmans, 1997)
paperback, $30.
- Bart D. Ehrman, Jesus: Apocalyptic Prophet of the New
Millennium (New York: Oxford University Press, 1999) paperback, $25.
NEW.

Faith: the Incarnational Narrative as History (New York: Oxford
University Press, 1996).

Testament Answers, rev. ed. (New York: Paulist Press, 1991) paperback,
$15. A brilliant, dense summary of what contemporary scholars are saying.
- Paula Fredriksen, Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews: A
Jewish Life and the Emergence of Christianity (New York: Knopf, 1999)
paperback, $26. NEW. An interesting, but unduly skeptical view.
- Joachim Jeremias, New Testament Theology I: The
Proclamation of Jesus (London: SCM Press, 1971).

of the Gospel (San Francisco: Harper San Francisco, 1999) hardcover,
