A set of 34 recommendations for proper use of student evaluations.

An update of the study above.  Nice summary of the instructor, student, and administrative characteristics that are and are not related to evaluation results.

Joe Cuseo, "Evaluating New-Student Seminars & Other First-Year Courses via Course-Evaluation Surveys: Research-Based Recommendations Regarding  Instrument Construction & Administration, Data Analysis, Data Summary, & Reporting Results" Marymount College, no date)

A nice paper on what student evaluations do and do not tell us, with good bibliography.  The paper explodes many myths about evaluation of faculty by students.  The site also contains a link to the paper in PDF format.

John C Damron, "Instructor Personality and the Politics of the Classroom" (1996)
A generally negative take on the usefulness of Student Evaluation of Teaching.  The author concludes: "Student ratings and the instructional changes implied by them are little more than prescriptions for professional demeanor. Although demonstrably linked to the social perceptions of students, these prescriptions are largely unrelated to the substantive products of instruction."

Warnings about the dangers of generalizing too greatly from written comments by students.  Also has a PDF link.

Penny M. Simpson and Judy A. Siguaw, "Student Evaluations of Teaching: An Exploratory Study of the Faculty Response," Journal of Marketing Education, 22 (December 2000): 199-213.

 Available on-line from the library.  Soon available via ERes.  This paper presents a less favorable view of student evaluations by concentrating on possibilities for instructor gamesmanship to influence outcomes, and differences between student outcomes and student evaluation of instruction.

IDEA Center  Perhaps the leading source of research on Faculty Evaluation and improving teaching. Their assessment instruments are widely used, and their seminars and workshops are top-notch.  Several of their materials appear elsewhere on this page.
