National Center for Biotechnology Information (Includes GenBank) A component of the National Library of Medicine whose mission is to develop new information technologies to aid in the understanding of fundamental molecular and genetic processes which control human health and disease. Includes databases for expressed sequence tags, sequence tagged sites, gene map of the human genome, and the cancer genome anatomy project

Joint Genome Institute The largest single-site research efforts in the DOE's human genome research
program have been the three genome centers at Los Alamos, Lawrence Berkeley, and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories. In late 1996, the DOE and the directors of these three laboratories decided to merge these centers into a single effort, the Joint Genome Institute (JGI). The JGI was formally established on January
1, 1997. The basic motivation was to create a research program with sufficient focus, breadth of capability, and critical mass to meet the newly emerging challenges of the Human Genome Project.

GenBank: National Center for Biotechnology Information (direct link) The U.S. genetic sequence database, an annotated collection of all publicly available DNA sequences. It is part of the International Nucleotide Sequence Database Collaboration and lists over one billion bases in nearly two million sequence records.

The WWW Virtual Library: Genetics A catalog of primarily human and plant genetics resources arranged by organismal category. Includes direct links to WWW sites devoted to genome projects, databases, stock centers and major conferences.

Agricultural Genome Information System (AGIS) The AGIS server is produced cooperatively by the Genome Informatics Groups of the NAL and the Dept. of Plant Biology of the University of Maryland. It includes information on genomic research, and related links to agriculturally important plants, animals and microorganisms.

GrainGenes The Captain Kangaroo pun aside, this is a genetic database for wheat, barley, rye, oats and sugarcane. Includes lists of genes, alleles, DNA probes, genetic and physical maps of chormosones etc. Also includes references to cited literature and addresses of researchers involved in the project.

Protein Data Bank (PDB) An archive of experimentally determined three-dimensional structures of biological macromolecules maintained by the Brookhaven National Laboratory.

Professional Associations

Professional Scientific Societies from the Biotechnology Information Center Includes links to WWW Home Pages of professional societies in the range of disciplines involved in biotechnology. Sample entities: American Association of Bioethics, The Genetics Society, Society for Industrial Microbiologists, etc.

American Society for Microbiology The oldest and largest single life science membership organization in the world, begun in 1899. ASM represents 24 disciplines of micribiological specialization.
