Spring Hill College -- Thomas Byrne Library

Automatic Proxy Configuration provides a seamless method of connection to restricted databases provided by SHC.   For most users, it will be a "set and forget" feature.

The library suggests using the most recent versions of either Internet Explorer or Netscape or Mozilla.

Follow directions for your browser and browser version in the table below:

  MS Internet Explorer Version 6.xx
Updated 3/17/2004

1. Select Tools
2. Select Internet Options
3. Select the Connections tab
4. On the Connections page, highlight the Dial-up Setting you wish to use (one click), then choose
Settings(Click here for picture)
5. Check the box marked Use automatic configuration script (second choice) and in the Address box enter the following address:

http://proxy.shc.edu/burke.pac   (Click here for picture)
6. click on OK
for Settings
7. click OK again on the Internet Options menu

Settings should take effect immediately.

Once you have properly setup your proxy connection you will be asked to submit your SHC ID and password the first time you attempt to use one of the subscription databases from off campus.

You should see this screen: (Click here for picture)

Add you SHC ID and password to the appropriate fields. (Click for Picture)

Once you have done this you may see another screen similar to this: (click here for Picture)

The letters and numbers preceding your name must be replaced with the following domain name - shc. (Click here for an example)

*Note: Remember that in some cases shc0 (zero) must precede your password. Example: shc012345

You should now be able to connect to the SHC subscription services.

http://proxy.shc.edu/burke.pac
7. click Reload and OK

Note:  There are problems with using the Library Proxy and Internet Explorer 5.5. Microsoft provides a fix with Service Patch 1. You must be using at least:

              Version 5.50.4522.1800  Update Versions:; SP1

Note: Netscape 6.0 does not support the Proxy.
         Netscape versions 6.1 and up do support Proxy.

NOTE:  Proxy Configuration for AOL Browser

The AOL Browser does not support the Library Proxy and will not support access to domain restricted resources from off campus.

Access to restricted resources from off campus through AOL can be accomplished
by installing another browser and configuring it for the Library Proxy. We
recommend that you use Netscape Communicator. To use domain restricted
Library resources:

    Dial up and login to AOL as usual;
    Minimize the AOL browser;
    Start the Netscape browser that is configured for the Library Proxy Service;
