Course Description:
The course deals with the study of the nurse as leader and case manager of client care. Students synthesize and apply theories of nursing, leadership, change and management. Issues of access, availability, utilization and quality of health care are explored. The roles of health care workers in providing leadership toward resolutions is explored.
1. Demonstrate use of decision making, problem solving and communication skills in nursing leadership and management situations.
2. Assess functions of nurse managers that are essential to effective staff evaluation, quality improvement and risk management in a variety of settings.
3. Incorporate the need for nurse participation in political systems, reform and nursing organizations.
4. Implement critical thinking skills when assessing ethical, moral, and legal values related to management and leadership in nursing.
5. Apply research,
teaching and economic components to leadership and management positions in
nursing.
Topical Outline:
Note: Chapter 12 and knowledge from assignments 12-3 and 12-5 are necessary to meet criteria for this class. The first half of the class will be theory and the second half application in the clinical setting. Teaching Strategies: Lecture, discussion, small group work, role play, audiovisuals and computer assisted instruction.
Grading Policy: A minimum of "C" is required in all nursing courses. A student may repeat one nursing course with a "D" once in order to achieve at least a "C" grade. A grade of "F" in a nursing course will result in review by the nursing faculty and will likely result in dismissal from the nursing program, but not necessarily the College.
The first half of the course will be in the classroom followed by required assignments to be completed and submitted while in the practicum experience. A detailed summary of assignments will be conducted prior to the end of classroom attendance.
Attendance Policy: Students are expected to be present for all classes. We have excellent guest speakers and if you miss their presentation, it will be impossible to capture the content. Please refer to the Spring Hill Bulletin of Information for exceptions to this rule. In order to fulfill requirements for the final grade, students must be present and complete all assignments in the class.
Evaluation Means by which final grade is computed:
Assignments: 50%
Exam: 40%
Resume: 10%

Assignments are due no later than December 4 and are to be sent as completed and
not accumulate. They are to be sent via a fax (334) 380-4495 or E-mail to Henderson@SHC.edu.
It is recommended that you have a fax or E-mail address in order to communicate
with me and your peers.
When you are in the selected practicum site, 21 additional hours will be directed toward management and leadership assignments. You will need to interview, shadow, and attend meetings with professionals in the areas of management, quality improvement, risk management, etc.
