A Select Guide to Reference and Source Materials

Introduction:

This guide is a blend of print, CD-ROM and Internet/World Wide Web resources. It was designed as supplemental material for instructional support. The guide is not intended to be comprehensive. Rather, it is intended to provide a launching point for the initial phases of selecting an historical figure for research, to identify a few "seed" works upon which to build, and to propose strategies for identification and gathering of additional resources.

It was intended to introduce specific concepts in the research process:   understanding primary and secondary sources - what forms they might take; how they are incorporated into research; and how they are published. It was designed as an aid to understanding mechanisms for information retrieval and specific types of "reference" resources which  organize and facilitate access to information resources (published and unpublished). It was designed to reinforce critical skills in examining the content, point of view, and credibility of print and Internet sources.

The assignment was to write a major research paper on a controversial aspect or character flaw, of a figure from United States history prior to 1980. Students were encouraged to consider persons other than presidents and other political figures.
