Books
    • must have ID to check out books
    • limit: 15 books
    • renewals: 1/per book
    • due dates: 14 days/ undergraduates; 28 days graduate students
    • grace period: 7 days
    • end-of-term: ALL BOOKS MUST BE RETURNED BY THE END-OF-TERM DUE DATE; THERE IS NO GRACE PERIOD.

Periodicals

    • May not be checked out

Reserve Materials

    • Must have ID to check out reserve materials; ID kept until materials are returned
    • Should know professor’s name or course name/#; check the online catalog to make sure items are on reserve. It may take up to 5 days--from the time a professor asks to place an item on reserve--for it to be processed.
    • Due dates: 2 hrs., 3 days, or overnight (set by professor)

Copiers:

  • Microform - $.10 (dimes only)
  • Photocopier - $.10 (quarters, dimes, nickels, and $1)
  • Computer Printouts - Free for current students, otherwise $.10
     (picked up and paid for at the Circulation/Reserve Desk)

Change:

  • available at the Circulation/Reserve Desk
  • no change for bills larger than $5
Fines/Fees/Notices
  • Only one overdue notice sent
        1st bill to borrower; 
        2nd bill to Business Office;
        2nd bill to be paid at BO
  • Books (1st 7 days-no fine; 8th day- $2/per item; maximum of $7.50/per item).
  • With $2 fines, no books may be borrowed
  • Reserve($1/hr per item; maximum of $10)
  • Lost Materials (Books- after 30 days-$62/per item; Reserve-cost of item +$12)

OFF-CAMPUS ACCESS TO ELECTRONIC LIBRARY SERVICES: GUIDELINES

The Library is pleased to offer off-campus access to many of the electronic databases to which it subscribes. To take advantage of this, you’ll need a computer, an Internet connection, and Internet browsing software (Netscape, Internet Explorer). One small caveat: the companies permitting access to their files all do it somewhat differently, so, we can’t yet provide you with one set of guidelines to fit all circumstances.

Expanded Academic Index citations to and full text articles on all academic areas
General Business File full text investment reports, company data, and citations/full text articles
Health Reference Center citations to and full text articles on health issues
LexisNexis Databases

Academic Universe

 

a wealth of information and statistics, much in full text, from reference works, on business, law, medicine, and current issues

Congressional Universe congressional information: bills, legislative histories. Etc.

CINAHL full-text materials and article citations on nursing
College Source full text of college catalogs
Encyclopedia Britannica full-text of the encyclopedia with Internet links
ERIC citations to and summaries of articles and research reports submitted to the U.S. government’s educational clearinghouse
PsychINFO citations to and summaries of books, book chapters and journal articles psychology and related fields

First Steps

  1. Contact Glenn Bell (bell@shc.edu; 380-3099) or Theresa M. Crider (tcrider@shc.edu; 380-3098) for an account on the College’s NT server.
  2. Make sure your computer and Internet access are working.
  3. Determine the version of Netscape or Internet Explorer that you have. To do this, open the browser, click "Help," then click "About."

Next Steps

  1. Open your Internet browser and in the Address box, type: http://www.shc.edu (This will take you to the College’s home page.)
  2. Click on "Library." (This will take you to the Library’s home page.)
  3. Click on "Electronic Library." This will take you a page entitled, "Databases and Electronic Indexes."
  4. At the bottom of the list of available databases on this page is a heading called "Off-Campus Access to Databases and Indexes." It includes full instructions for accessing databases from off-campus.
  5. To reach all services, you’ll need a username and password (this is why you set up an account on the NT server).
